Calcaneum

The definitions of Bone Units 2, 5, 3 and 9 were changed to reflect the orientation of the calcaneum as conventionally defined.

For the Fincastle Project, Bone Units 16, 17, 18 and 19 were added.

BU 1

SC A

Complete element.

image

BU 13

SC B

Element complete except for the removal of all or most of the sustentaculum tali. Opposite of BU 4. (GL)

image

BU 7

SC C

Element from which all or most of facet for lateral malleolus and all or most of facet for navicular cuboid removed. Entire body and sustentaculum intact. (TH)

image

BU 2

SC D

Proximal portion of element consisting of all of tuber calcis and all or most of the body.

image

BU 8

SC E

Un-fused tuber Calcis (cap) detached and not associated with the rest of element. Code condition as “weathered”.

image

BU 6

SC F

Tuber calcis, no more than half of distal portions of body and all or most of facet for lateral malleolus removed. Proximal half or less of body, all of facet for tibial tarsal and sustentaculum present and intact.

image

BU 14

SC G

Unit consists of a portion of the posterior surface, including the medial surface for articulation with the astragalus. (WU)

image

BU 10

SC H

Like BU 6, but with sustentaculum also removed. (GL)

image

BU 5

SC I

Tuber calcis and no more than proximal half of body of calcaneum removed. Rest of element intact. Similar to BU 3.

image

BU 3

SC J

Distal end of element including all articular surface and very little to none of adjoining body.

image

BU 9

SC K

Extreme distal portion of element (facet for lateral malleolus). Often triangular in shape and corresponds to missing portions at distal end of BU 6 and 7. (TH)

image

BU 4

SC L

Unit consists of all of fragment of sustentaculum (extreme medial segment of element). Remainder of element missing.

image

BU 11

SC M

Cochlear process and adjacent anterior section of the body of the calcaneum. Sustentaculum and proximal portion of the element are missing. (GL)

image

BU 12

SC N

All or most of articular facet for lateral malleolus detached from rest of element. (GL)

image

BU 15

SC O

Unit consists of a small lateral fragment composed only of the articular facet for the naviculo-cuboid. (TVH)

image

BU 16

SC P

Posterior proximal 1/4 of element. Anterior half of BU 2.

image

BU 17

SC Q

Element is split sagittally; either the medial or lateral side is present.

image

BU 18

SC R

Element is complete minus missing the tuber calcis (cap). Opposite to BU 8 (juvenile).

image

BU 19

SC S

Element is a fragment of body characterized by shape.
