Pelvis
The pelvis consists of two os coxae fused together along the pubic symphysis. For the purpose of analysis, each os coxae is considered a separate element. During initial one unit definition, using the Cactus Flower procedure, fused ox coxae were considered together in bone unit definitions (BU 1 and 12). This was discontinued, and now each half of a fused pelvis is coded as a separate element and two entries made.

Complete acetabulum, all or most of shaft of ilium, most of pubis, and shaft of ischium represented. Approximately 1/3 – 2/3 of obturator foramen margins present. Pubic symphysis and body of ischium totally absent.

Unit consists of all, or all but extreme margins of ilium and most of pubis joined at acetabulum. Includes pubic portion of border of obturator foramen. Acetabular and other portions of ischium absent. (TH)

SC I
Consists of 2/3 of acetabulum at base of ilium and pubis. For ilium, all shaft and small portion of scarred articular surface (tuber sacrale) represented. For pubis, essentially complete shaft represented but body and symphyseal surface absent. This BU essentially a combination of BU 18 and BU 10. (AL)

Complete acetabulum with all or most of shaft of ischium and all or most of pubis. Obturator foramen intact and totally enclosed. (AL)

Approximately 1/3 of acetabulum consisting of small isolated articular facet located at origin of pubis. Includes none to only small portion of pubis.

Small portion of acetabulum. Not clear what specific portion is represented. Lacks any shaft portions. (TH)

Complete or near complete ilium detached from rest of element. Small to moderate portion of shaft of ilium may or may not be present.
