Caudal Vertebra

The proximal 5 to 6 caudal vertebrae have complete arches and spinous processes. The remaining caudal vertebrae consist simply of vertebral body. The bone unit definition indicates which set of caudal elements is referred to. Only the anterior and posterior epiphyses on the body of the element are considered when coding whether the element is fused or un-fused. Loose un-fused anterior or posterior epiphyses unassociated with the rest of the element are coded as being of weathered condition and are assigned their appropriate BU. Epiphyses on the spinous and transverse processes are ignored in considering element fusion. When isolated un-fused epiphyses from the spinous or transverse processes are identified, they are coded as “undifferentiated” BU.

For the Fincastle Project, Bone Units 12-19 were added.

BU 1

SC A

Complete element

image

BU 2

SC B

Unit consists of one of first four or five caudal vertebra from which one or both transverse processes have been removed.

image

BU 4

SC C

Element with the processes missing or damaged so that unit consists of essentially intact vertebral body.

image

BU 10

SC D

Unit is similar to BU 9 (either proximal or distal half of centrum) but also includes the attached proximal or distal portion of the spinous process. (WU)

image

BU 9

SC E

Either the proximal or distal ½ of centrum of caudal vertebrae. (KK)

image

BU 3

SC F

Unit consists of one of first four or five caudal vertebra from which ½ or less of the ventral portion of the body has been removed by smashing. Similar to BU 5.

image

BU 5

SC G

Element with more than ½ of ventral portion of body removed. Vertebral processes may or may not be present and/or damaged. Similar to BU 3. (DS)

image

BU 11

SC H

Centrum of unit is complete, but spinous process and neural arch are missing. Both transverse processes are complete, although they may be damaged through crushing. (WU)

image

BU 7

SC I

Unit consists of ventral ½ or less of vertebral body, with arch and processes totally removed or damaged.

BU 6

SC J

Detached spinous process of caudal vertebra.

image

BU 8

SC K

Incomplete portion of one of the distal caudal vertebrae without arch or vertebral processes. (DS)

BU 12

SC L

Transverse process of caudal vertebra. (SB)

BU 13

SC M

Missing articulations on anterior body (caudal 1-6). (SB)

image

BU 14

SC N

Small fragment; anterior or posterior articular surface present only. (SB)

image

BU 15

SC O

Portion of transverse process only from the first four or five caudal vertebra. (SB)

BU 16

SC P

Vertebral arch and spinous process intact. Missing body and transverse processes. (SB)

image

BU 17

SC Q

Complete body; one or both centrums missing (juvenile). (SB)
